Residenz Square and the Rider Sculptures

back to overview

Here in Residenz Square are a number of historical monuments that testify to the town’s chequered history. The large building with the sandstone-coloured tower set in front of it is the erstwhile Count Palatinate Castle. This was built on the orders of Count Palatine Frederick II between 1520 and 1539. The magnificent Renaissance building was replacing an earlier one from the 15th century, which had burnt down shortly before.
